Lets Give 'em Something to Talk About

The entire Notre Dame blogosphere has been talking about the hype of Russell and the bashing of Quinn for quite some time now. We all know that owners, general managers and the real talking heads have Quinn as the number one QB prospect in the draft. That doesn't mean that he will go first in April, but it does mean that he will have his chance with a better opportunity. Hopefully Russell goes first to the Raiders and Quinn drops to 8 or 9. The situations at those areas are much more condusive to a long NFL Career.

When Russell and Quinn work out at their respective pro-Days, it will be Quinn who shines bright. Russell has shown that it only takes 7 weeks to become fat and lazy, while Quinn shows that it takes 365 days and 24/7 to stay in top physical shape.

I would love to find out who these scouts are. Probably UM graduates.

I believe Quinns stock has dropped because of his play in some big games, but dropping to the 3rd or 4th round is absolutely ridiculous. I would not be surprised if Brady got taken anywhere from 1-10, but I see Quinn going around the 8-10 Pick. This based on my projected needs of the teams up top.

9 Irish Players invited to NFL Combine

9 ND players were invited to the NFL combine. Not a huge number, but a nice showing for our team. As a reference, OSU has 9 also invited. 2 ND player invites were revoked as you can see below.

Brady Quinn, Victor Abiamiri, Derek Landri, Darius Walker, Jeff Samardzija (invite revoked, signed a baseball contract), Rhema McKnight, Ryan Harris, Dan Santucci, Tom Zbikowski (Invite revoked, has applied for a 5th season at Notre Dame).

Senior Bowl Practice Notes (Defense)

The one bright spot for the Defense this past season was the improved play of Victor Abiamiri. He became a strong pass rusher and improved considerably with his Run Defending. He will make a very good NFL player and showed what he had this week at the Senior Bowl. Notes by Scout.com

Monday Practice Notes: Gets upfield very well for a player of his size with great reaction to the ball. Does not move very well laterally against the run.

Tuesday Practice Notes: Athletic prospect who shows the ability to change directions well. Dips his shoulder off the edge in his pass rush. Does struggle to get off of blocks when engaged and needs to be quicker on his counter moves in his pass rush. Some teams have inquired about him possibly being a 34 outside linebacker.

Wednesday Practice Notes: Athletically looks the part but had a quiet day. Part of the reason is because he struggled to get off of blocks. Change of direction during pass rush drills was not as stellar as was perceived during yesterday’s practice.

Thursday Practice Notes: In pass rushing situation, Abiamiri does not posses the greatest initial moves but did an especially nice job on his countermoves today. One mental breakdown did allow a back to break contain to make a big run to the outside during inside drill.

Analysis: Physically there are not many who are on Abiamiri’s level. One of the more impressive looking prospects down in Mobile, his overall play was not as stellar. Inconsistent in many areas of his game as the week progresses, especially struggling with getting off blocks at times. Some teams are looking at him as a possible 34 outside linebacker. A talented prospect who will likely go higher than his play would indicate.

So you want to draft a Quarterback

When was the last time a top 10-drafted quarterback won a Super Bowl for the team that took him? Troy Aikman, who was taken in 1989 (Trent Dilfer — taken sixth in 1994 — won for Baltimore not Tampa Bay, and Drew Bledsoe doesn't get credit for Tom Brady's championship with New England). It's O.K. to take a flier on a Kevin Kolb, Drew Stanton or Troy Smith in the second or third round, and teams needing a quarterback are starting to think about that option a little more rather than moving heaven and earth to move up for the top two guys.
