Is Quinn better for Browns?

6.14.2007

Brady Quinn grew up during the worst of times in the Cleveland Browns era. Now he hopes to make them the Best of times.

Top 250, looks good for Notre Dame

Brady Quinn makes a special Call

It's not easy wearing green

The big surprise about Notre Dame wearing green against USC this fall is that it won't be a surprise. Coach Charlie Weis said the team will wear green jerseys to honor the 1977 team. Weis was a senior at Notre Dame when the 11th-ranked Irish wore their normal blue jerseys for warmups, then donned green for the game and defeated No. 5 USC 49-19 en route to the national title. But this is the first time in memory that the Irish announced in advance they would wear green for a game. It hasn't brought the Irish much luck in recent years. Before beating Army 41-9 last season in green, they lost to USC 41-9 in 2005, lost to Boston College 14-7 in 2002 and lost to Georgia Tech 35-28 in the 1999 Gator Bowl.

Quinn, Quinn and more Quinn

Hard to believe coming from Pittsburg (wink, wink) that a writer would get so enamored by the choice of a division opponent in the NFL Draft. He is so full of jealousy and envy that he quotes Merrill Hoge as a source of competent talent evaluation.

You can read many articles, and depending on where and who writes them, the story is different. Browns fans are inebriated with exhilaration after the choice. Other fans, not so much. One Writer tells Browns fans don't lambast Brady.

Just ask the Question: Do you get the feeling that the Miami Dolphins' decision to NOT draft Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn will be a topic of conversation in southern Florida well into the next decade? Just ask this guy.

The rumors abound:
Browns general manager Phil Savage called rumors that owner Randy Lerner had instructed him to draft a quarterback "a myth," and you'd have to believe him after Cleveland took Wisconsin offensive tackle Joe Thomas with the third pick.

Even though the Browns traded with the Dallas Cowboys for the 22nd pick and took Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn of Dublin, there is no way Savage could have known he could get Quinn once he passed on him at No. 3.

Still, in the Internet age, the rumors were understandable. Quinn's pro day workout at Notre Dame was the only one that Lerner attended, and he later told a Cleveland TV news anchor that he'd love to have LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell, who went to Oakland with the No. 1 pick. Add in a little dash of Charlie Frye and you can see how this stuff gets started.

The furor in Miami over the selection of Ohio State receiver Ted Ginn Jr. instead of Quinn with the No. 9 pick was exacerbated by an ESPN.com report that Ginn might be forced to wear a walking boot for six weeks and might not be ready for training camp.

If that's true -- and that seems a little murky at this point -- Ginn might have aggravated the mid-foot sprain he suffered in the national championship game Jan. 8 simply because NFL teams are hung up on seeing every player work out and Ginn felt compelled to run a couple of 40-yard dashes in April to show NFL scouts how fast he is.

So Ginn came back and worked out possibly a little before should have and ran a 4.3 even though he said he was about 80 to 85 percent, and now there is some question whether he will be able to start training camp in time for Miami. In light of the post-draft uproar, it would be interesting to know whether the Dolphins think it was worth it to see him run.

We Got Him!

Quinn knew Cleveland would not take him at 3, but he had no idea how much they really wanted to get him.

Savage hung up the phone. There were about 30 people -- coaches, scouts, owner's family and friends -- in the Cleveland draft room, and when Savage said, "We got him!'' the place exploded. One of my HBO buddies, Jason Cohen, a Browns freak, texted me thusly: "Best day of Browns FB in 10 years!''

Just Another Manic......

Saturday!

Another Saturday, this time in the spring time and Notre Dame dominated the news. This made a lot of haters very upset and gives them more reasons to Hate the Irish. Read the story, change the name from Quinn to Russell and you have Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton on the Today show screaming foul and the double standard. But make it a Notre Dame Eliteist QB and noboby shows compassion. Well, As a fan, it was upsetting to see Quinn drop and his mug shown over and over. But as I read commentary from the bashers in the past few days, I am Happy that it turned out the way it did.

Quinn was on over and over again. So it was just like a cool crisp Fall Saturday and Notre Dame was the topic of discussion. It's good to be an Irish fan.

17 Million Dollar Drop

In The Bucket....

A lot is being made over Brady's drop to number 22, but I don't think it is that big of a deal. Other than the emotional roller coaster of being on T.V. with your embarrassed mug on every two seconds, the draft is the draft and Brady just happened to be this years story. The good news for him is that the same team that passed on him at the three spot came back to select him. That is worth more than he would have gotten at 22 with Dallas.

The Browns called on Friday and told Brady that the third pick would not be used on him. So when the Browns selected Thomas, it wasn't a shock. Now Brady can have a stud Left Tackle to protect him. Something he hasn't had in a while. The bigger shock came later when the Dolphins selected Ginn Jr. out of tOSU. A side note: Junior will be in a boot for the next 8 or so weeks and will miss the first camp of the season. Good choice on that one Fins.

So the Dolphins passed on Brady and the news was out that it may be a while before he hears his name. The Commissioner took him into an undisclosed secret location to bar the media from feeding on Quinn. Still only embarrassment, no loss of life, no loss of cash in hand and he will only be able to tip the Scores girls Fitty $$ instead of a C-Note.

Did Brady lose any money by not being selected? Yes, on paper he did. I played the lottery yesterday and guess what, I didn't win. Did I lose 100 Million Dollars?

Quinn will do fine. He is a starter when the season opens and he will show his grit and toughness to all. Especially on October 14th when the Dolphins travel to Cleveland.

There have been other debacles in the draft. After a disappointing senior season in which Dan Marino saw his NFL value slip considerably, the Miami Dolphins selected Dan with the 27th overall pick in the 1983 draft. He was the fifth quarterback selected in that draft class. Boy did he make those who passed on him look bad. Dan Marino became the only quarterback to top the 60,000 yard passing mark. He also became the only quarterback to toss more than 400 touchdown passes. He has thrown more pass attempts and more completions than anyone else in the history of the game.

So Quinn going at 22 to a team that needs a quality QB is not the worst thing to happen. My sons are in a quandry now with us living in Cincinnati. They love Brady, but don't like the Browns. At least we will see him once a year down here.

The other day this was brought up:

Dude, It was just a little Ganga. Three players in the upcoming draft have admitted to using "A Little". Who are they? Read it here.

The Trojans lost out on the West's best QB so livin in L.A. might just be a problem in the near future. Not for the Irish. Let's just hope his mom doesn't play in the backfield. She tosses a big right.
