Notre Dame: Former Catholic High School star Harrison Smith, a backup strong safety whose position has been modified to play like a linebacker at times and a pass-rusher, intercepted a pass and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown.

Smith also had five tackles and earned defensive MVP honors.

Jimmy Clausen was 10-of-27 passing for 183 yards during the 60-minute game with a running clock.

"I just feel great right now," said Clausen, who was hampered last season after elbow surgery.

"Jimmy got good zip on the ball," Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis said. "Obviously, he can sling it."

Rising sophomore Robert Hughes ran for 100 yards on 22 carries.
